The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
