Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
